When you should just scrap it

Most of this site argues that working transformers are worth more than their metal. This page is the other half of that argument: sometimes scrap really is the right answer, and you deserve to hear that rather than be walked through a resale process that was never going to work.

Four honest cases

When recycling beats resale

In each of these situations the resale market is either closed to your unit or not worth the delay. Scrapping is not a failure outcome — it is a real transaction that should still pay you, and you should never be charged a disposal fee for a transformer that contains recoverable copper, aluminum, and core steel.

The unit failed and cannot be economically repaired

Burned windings, a cracked tank, or a core fault put a unit past the point where remanufacturing pays. Its value is the copper, aluminum, and core steel inside it.

The oil contains PCBs

PCB-contaminated fluid triggers regulated disposal. Remanufacturers generally will not take these units, so compliant recycling is the realistic path.

The unit is genuinely at end of life

Very old, heavily corroded, or obsolete-voltage units may have no resale market even if they still energize.

You need it gone today

Resale involves testing time. If the schedule will not wait, scrap is faster — just make sure you are being paid rather than charged.

The one that is not negotiable

PCBs in the oil change everything

Polychlorinated biphenyls were used in transformer dielectric fluid for decades. Under the Toxic Substances Control Act, the EPA banned the manufacture of PCBs in 1979 and regulates the use, storage, and disposal of PCB-containing equipment under 40 CFR Part 761. Units built before the late 1970s are the primary concern, though contamination can also appear in later units through servicing with contaminated fluid.

The EPA's regulatory thresholds are concentration-based: fluid at or above 500 ppm is classified as PCB, 50 to less than 500 ppm is PCB-contaminated, and below 50 ppm is non-PCB. Those classifications determine the handling, recordkeeping, and disposal obligations that apply — and they are the reason a remanufacturer will generally decline a contaminated unit outright.

If your unit is old and has never been screened, an oil sample is the cheapest step you can take before making any decision. Nothing about the unit's value can be settled without it, and the obligation to handle the fluid correctly does not go away by selling the unit to someone who ignores it.

What scrapping actually pays

Know the floor before you agree to it

If scrap is genuinely the right path, you still want to know roughly what the metal is worth so you can tell a fair offer from a bad one. Published benchmarks for whole copper-wound transformers have recently sat around $0.15 to $0.30 per pound — Rockaway Recycling posted $0.21/lb on its own list as of July 27, 2026, iScrap App's user reports ranged from $0.15 to $0.25/lb in May 2026, and ScrapMonster quoted a U.S. average near $0.30/lb in July 2026. One aggregator publishes a wider $0.20–$0.60/lb band with no date attached.

Aluminum-wound units price lower than copper-wound ones on the same weight basis, and dry-type units are graded differently from liquid-filled ones because there is no fluid to handle. Weight is the multiplier, so the nameplate weight figure is what turns a rate into a dollar amount.

The one thing to refuse: paying a disposal fee to get rid of a transformer that still has metal in it. If someone is charging you to haul it away, get a second opinion.
